Sordell, Riley and Ricketts To Prove Their Worth
When a new manager takes over at a club, players have to re-sell themselves to the new gaffer to prove they are worthy of a first team place. For those that have missed out on securing a regular place under previous management have the perfect opportunity to showcase their skills and prove they can do the job expected of them.
Marvin Sordell is a perfect example. Sordell was capped by Team GB in the Summer, where he represented our great nation in the Olympics. Although Stuart Pearce had faith in Sordell’s ability, previous manager Owen Coyle seemed to have lost some faith in the player, where he opted to start Benik Afobe, SKD and Ngog (when fit) for majority of the games this season.
Now that Coyle is no longer with the club, Sordell has still missed out on first team opportunities under the short spell Jimmy & Co have had looking after the first team. Joe Riley is another player who seems to be overlooked, whilst Sam Ricketts also seems like he’s simply there to warm the bench – although we must admit Stephen Warnock does look a better fit at left-back.
We’re sure many fans will also be wondering whether Freedman will make changes to the RB position, possibly give Riley a chance or whether he’ll end up sticking with Mears. This has been a position which has been questioned by fans for some time, as Mears has seemed ineffective in majority of the games he’s played. Maybe this is down to the broken leg sustained last season, a confidence issue or both.
Nevertheless, all eyes will be on the game against Cardiff City this weekend. A win is a must for us, otherwise we may find ourselves in the relegation zone – all depending on the number of goals scored by those below us. We need to pick up at least 9 points from the next 4 games, with 3 of those games being played at the Reebok – although we’d prefer to pick up 12, that would hopefully see us move nearer to the top of the table.
So, here’s to the weekend; and before you ask – yes we’re 100% behind Dougie Freedman!
