Souness? Really? Oh God No!

We must really be getting desperate to be linked with the likes of Graeme Souness. It was a very fortunate situation a few seasons ago – before Gary Megson was provided with the task of steadying the ship after Sammy Lee was given the boot due to a poor start to the 2007/08 season – reports had suggested Graeme Souness rejected the offer of taking over at the Reebok, after attending a ‘final’ meeting between himself and Big Phil.

One can wonder what the situation may have been like if Souness had taken over then. The former Newcastle United boss hasn’t managed a team since 2006, and although he currently has a job – which suits him quite well to be honest, as a commentator, it seems once again his name is linked to the Reebok post.

With Souness’ CV boasting managerial posts at clubs such as Liverpool, Galatasary, Blackburn, Southampton and of course Newcastle United, you can’t argue that he doesn’t have the managerial experience needed for a club such as ours – however, it’s that situation again where we just don’t wish to have an appointment such as Souness at our club.

Nevertheless, we’re currently in good hands. Jimmy Phillips, Julian Darby and Sammy Lee are currently looking after the team.  We hope the club, Phil and the board give Jimmy & Co a chance. Currently, the way we see it – there aren’t any attractive names on Bolton’s managerial shopping list, unless they have a list targetting managers who are already have a club.

What do you think about Jimmy, Sammy and Julian? Do you think they can do the job at Bolton? Do you think they have what it takes?

I think a lot of us would like to see 3 men, so closely associated with Wanderers, succeed. Jimmy and Sammy are happily getting credit for the U18s fantastic start, following their NI Milk Cup success of the previous two years. If the future is in local talent, we also need to recognise that the Development Squad is nowhere near ready for first team action yet although Joe Riley and Josh Vela will hopefully be playing first team fooball sometime this season. The question is therefore ‘how do we cope in the next few years until people like Andy Kellett, Zach Clough and Rob Holding are ready?’. The conundrum is that we won’t have the players to do well in the Premier League next year, if we go up, unless we spend some more of Eddie’s money which doesn’t seem to be available. Do we appoint a McCarthy or even the much unwanted Souness to patch up a squad capable of getting promotion and desperately hanging onto Premiership status whilst Jimmy & Sammy go back to getting the current Youth Squad up to First Team level? I don’t know the right answer to that, and I suspect that Gartside doesn’t know either, but I think it’s the right question and one that Eddie is wrestling with right now.

I wouldnt mind Souness to be honest, these players have had 2 years of Coyle telling them how fanatstic they are and it clearly hasnt worked, Souness would knock some heads together and it could be what they need

Souness is a bully and not technically minded for the modern game now. He has spent to long out of the game. This is the guy Bolton beat in the memorable FA Cup. Lets give Jimmy and Co and chance. The money going to be spent on a manager could be invested in signings in January who the trio think are capable of taking us up. They know the young talent about with match experience. A good centre half and striker are what are required. Kev Davies centre half?
