Phil Gartside Re-iterates Club’s Focus

Phil Gartside has gone on record to re-iterate to fans that their primary focus this season is to gain promotion.

Before the season kicked off, Bolton fans everywhere were brimming full of confidence, after retaining majority of the squad through a busy pre-season transfer window, the majority believed we would run away with the Championship title after a bitterly disappointing season in the Premier League.

“If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen, but it’s a goal we’ve set ourselves and it’s got to happen as far as we’re concerned.”
Phil Gartside on BBC Sport

Things have panned out very differently over the last few weeks and it’s been a reminder to everyone (including the club and playing staff that the Championship is probably the toughest league in England. Promotion as Phil has confirmed is “an absolute goal”, whether it be achieved by winning the title or through the playoffs – it’s a goal the team need to achieve!

We do have a superb squad, one that is more than capable of taking the game to a higher level, however we’ve been unable to do this so far. If we fail to gain promotion to the top flight this season, and although we’re playing in the Championship at the moment, a new generation of football will been seen at Bolton, one which we may have to get used to very quickly.

Just for the record, many supporters did not think we would run away with the Championship. Prior to the start of the season we had taken 53 points from the previous 57 league games. Our squad is seriously deficient in defensive quality and most of us who attend every week are now seriously concerned that we will be fighting a relegation battle unless significant changes are made at the club….and quickly.

I agree with Steven that expectations were not high amongst everyone, but were hyped up in the media and possibly by the club itself. Our defence has been woeful for 2 years or more and the replacements brought in do not seem up to the job. For me, Coyle has 3 games to sort it and if he fails he along with his anonymous sidekicks should go.

@Senor @Steven Battersby Not sure if you’ve spotted a few reports out today stipulating that the lads have been working very hard behind the scenes, tightening up that defence and looking at where they’ve gone wrong during matches.

Let’s hope we do see a difference starting at Watford, otherwise this international break – which to be honest was timed perfectly for us due to our performances, will be unfortunately have been wasted.
