Phil Gartside – We Applaud You

We’re sure we’re going to get slated for this by many fans out there, but we can’t not help but applaud Phil Gartside for what happened last night at the Fans Forum.

A fan directed a question to the Bolton Chairman, asking him “Do you accept that you are ‘the’ common denominator in the demise of the club?”

There are many fans out there who have openly criticised Gartside for numerous decisions over the last 5 years, this included the decision to employ Gary Megson whom fans never wanted at the club in the first place.

Last night, one fan plucked up the courage to ask Phil the that question, to which Phil replied “Yes”.

Phil followed this with words to the effect, that he accepts responsbility and there were some wrong decisions made over time. As a Bolton fan and Chairman of the club it hurt to see Bolton get relegated.

What we need to do now is to unite and rebuild our club back to what we remember it as – a strong family club, one which supports the players, the manager (as we have done over the last season), the backroom staff and most of all the chairman.

We have had times where fans, managers and the chairman didn’t see eye to eye – but those days are now in the past, holding onto a grudge like that doesn’t benefit anyone.

We have been through some horrid times at the Reebok over the last 5 years, some have not pulled through it yet, nevertheless we probably have the best squad we have had in 5 years – and even though we have been relegated from the top flight, we also have a new lease of life.

Here’s to moving on and winning the Championship, and most of all getting back into the Premier League.

I applaud him too for that answer. However, it does make me very curious as to which specific decisions it is he regrets. Not giving Big Sam the money? Appointing Little Sam? Appointing Megson? Appointing Coyle?! Giving Megson cash to splash? Sacking Megson? Not sacking Coyle? Apparently he invited the fan that asked the question for a private chat, I’d've loved to be listening in on that one!

And as Jack Dearden pointed out after the question was asked, in Gartside’s time as chairman the club has had its most succesful period in its history – I cant really argue with that and it opened my eyes a little
